RHS Malvern Spring Festival is celebrating the unveiling of Auricula ‘Princess Charlotte’, a new cultivar bred by Drointon Nurseries.
The new plant was selected ahead of the Princess’ arrival for its buttermilk yellow flowers, which would be fitting for both a Prince or Princess. The multi award-winning nursery has nurtured the plant for many months in preparation for its launch at RHS Malvern.
Annabel Graham, Owner of Drointon Nurseries, said: “We have been keeping our cultivar closely under wraps since the Duchess of Cambridge announced her pregnancy last September. We are delighted to mark this momentous occasion with our new Auricula and are sure it will be popular because of both its namesake and beautiful, soft, dusky, buttermilk flowers.”
The plant’s colouring perfectly matches the dress worn by The Duchess of Cambridge on the steps of the Lindo Wing when showing Princess Charlotte to the world for the very first time. Catherine’s dress was a yellow, floral print, shift dress from the British designer Jenny Packham.
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall - Princess Charlotte’s Step Grandmother - is known to be a firm fan of Auriculas. Yellow, purple and white Auricula featured in her bridal bouquet at her wedding to HRH Prince of Wales.
Ken Nottage, CEO of the Three Counties Agricultural Society, said: “We’re so pleased that Drointon Nurseries have chosen RHS Malvern to unveil their beautiful new Auricula ‘Princess Charlotte’. We’re thrilled to be marking the arrival of not only a new royal, but also celebrating this and all of the other new varieties that are launching here in our 30th anniversary year. The Floral Marquee is always a crowd pleaser and Drointon Nurseries have become stalwarts of the show, winning Best in Show in 2014, just one of a hat trick of RHS Gold Medals”
Founding husband and wife duo, Robin and Annabel Graham of Drointon Nurseries have over 20 years experience growing Primula Auriculas. The Yorkshire nursery has exhibited at RHS Malvern Spring Festival for 7 year, winning 3 RHS Gold Medals at RHS Malvern alone.
RHS Malvern Spring Festival is gearing up to celebrate its 30th anniversary with one of its most exciting line ups to date. The festival is expected to see more than 86,000 visitors over the 4 day show. Visitors will be inspired by 29 stunning show gardens, a Floral Marquee featuring over 80 award winning nurseries, a host of garden and food celebrity and much much more.
